THE DILAPIDATED GRAFFITI-ED WOODEN FOUR CAR GARAGE THAT WAS NEXT TO OUR DRIVEWAY WAS A HAZARDOUS EYE SORE.
IF WE EVER WANTED TO SELL THE MONEY PIT, THAT MESS JUST HAD TO GO. THOUGH THE GARAGE WAS ON OUR STREET, THE GARAGE BELONGED TO THE CORNER DELI THAT WAS ON CASTLETON AVENUE. BECAUSE OF THEIR DEPLORABLE CONDITION I CALLED E.P.A. BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING.
IN PASSING BY ONE DAY, ONE OF THE DOORS WERE OPEN AND I LOOKED IN. THEIR WAS AN ABANDONED CAR WITH FOUR FLAT TIRES AND OPEN CANS OF GASOLINE, AMONG OTHER THINGS THE DELI STORED IN THERE.
SINCE WE WERE ON THE SECOND FLOOR AND HAD A VIEW OF OUR DRIVEWAY AND ALL FOUR OF THE CASTLETON AVENUE BACKYARDS THAT BORDERED OUR PROPERTY. WE COULD SEE THAT THE BACK DOOR OF THE DELI AND THAT FROM TIME TO TIME EMPLOYEES WOULD COME OUT AND ENTER THE GARAGE SPACES FOR SUPPLIES. BECAUSE OF THAT I WAS ABLE TO SUBMIT A COMPLAINT TO OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association). THEY CAME, ASSESSED THE SITUATION AND ORDERED THE GARAGES TORN DOWN. THAT WAS ONE SMALL VICTORY FOR US. THE DELI FOUND TWO GUYS TO TEAR THE GARAGES APART NAIL BY NAIL AND BOARD BY BOARD.
THE PILE OF TRASH LAID ON THAT LOT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, UNTIL (so I heard) THE DELI WAS FINED AND THE DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION CLEARED IT ALL OUT.
WE HAD THE CHAIN LINK FENCE ADDED TO IN ORDER TO KEEP OUR PROPERTY LINE CLEARLY DEFINED. tmp
